I strive to bring a sense of calm and curiosity to learning. You’ll see me chat with your student in order to find common ground. You’ll see me ask them what they like and don’t like about the subject we’re working on. You’ll see me slowly lead them to the discovery that the stuff they like is hidden within the stuff they don’t like. I’ll be looking for motivations, misunderstandings, and coping mechanisms (such as the very common “distract and delay” mechanism). I’ll also be telling stories in order to alleviate anxieties or to change self-defeating beliefs, and to give them a picture of what self-study and group-study will look like after high school, whether it’s for college, work, or hobbies. |

I don’t claim to know everything, and when I encounter something that I don’t understand, your student and I will walk through discovering what to do. In this way, I model how to approach problems with a solution-oriented attitude. I also model how to marshal multiple resources, evaluate them, and piece together the useful ones. My goals here are to dissolve any emotional connection between “not knowing” and “bad”, and stop the student from feeling rushed. It’s the cult of “hurry” that kills curiosity and patience, and causes students to give in to anxiety. I have a BA in Computer Science and English, a certificate in Automechanics, and a certificate in Videogame Design. You can see more details about my experience on LinkedIn. Although I've had teaching jobs, most of my experience is in the tech industry. I'm taking a break from corporate work while I shepherd my kids through middle and high school. |
